Controversial Concert in Cuba

Today in AP Spanish we watched a news clip about the Juanes concert that was held in Cuba on Sunday, September 20. Juanes is the most popular rock artist in Latin America. Juanes, along with several other popular musicians, organized "Paz Sin Fronteras," or "Peace Without Borders," a free, five-hour concert in Cuba. Over a million Cubans attended. The concert was very controversial since Cuba's goverment is communist. Many Cuban exiles were opposed to the concert because they feel that Juanes was legitimizing communism. However, Juanes said he was there only for the music, not for political reasons. He said "Music should travel like air, it should reach everywhere."

I think that the Juanes concert was a good thing. Despite the fact that Cuba is communist, Juanes made it clear that he was not there to support the government, but for the people. I think that his concert actually brought a taste of freedom to the Cubans-a taste of the freedom of speech- because music is a wonderful way of expressing ourselves.
