Prop 8 from Michael Lines

Prop 8:I too would like to weigh in a Proposition Eight. You're not seriously suggesting that legal policies should be established based on Dictionary.com are you? Why are you so scared of Homosexuals getting married? Why do we have to disregard the past two centuries of American progress? You said it yourself, Civil Unions and Marriages aren't the same thing: well put- I applaud you for admitting that. You go on to suggest that churches will lose their tax-exempt status. That's simply not the case? it's truly absurd. The Catholic Church for instance ONLY marries Catholic couples, as does the LDS church, have they lost their tax-exempt status? No? not even slightly. In fact, the court decision actually says: ?no religion will be required to change its religious policies or practices with regard to same-sex couples, and no religious officiant will be required to solemnize a marriage in contravention of his or her religious beliefs.? Abraham Lincoln states the idea of equality more eloquently then I ever could.November 19, 1863:"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."You can spin the issue however you want. You can claim it's for the children, you can claim it's to protect family, you can claim it symbolizes less government, you can say it's to restore the sanctity of marriage, you can claim it's in the Bible, and you can even claim it's fair. But at the end of the day, "No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another, and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him." (Thomas Jefferson)

I am going to pull in what I said on another blog, because I completely agree with what you are saying, and you have brought up the past. We all always complain about how blacks and Native Americans were treated, yet here we are taking more rights away from people. Why?

Because it is what we, as Americans, like to do: take away rights. :D

I've seen a few postings on LDS blogs that they plan to distribute YES ON 8 literature to kids TOMORROW ON HALLOWEEN. Please see this before voting on Prop 8!

They claim they want to isolate and insulate kids, and now millions of California kids will be returning home to ask mom and dad about "sodomy" or whatever propaganda the mormons plan to distribute. I'm working on a response to this that I'm hoping I can get to "go viral" tonight. Moms are pretty good about spreading Halloween horror stories via email.

I'm also amused at how many "YES ON 8" folks have their Halloween plans on their blogs and webpages. Apparently, glorifying Satan is A-OK, but allowing your neighbors to live in peace even if you disagree with them isn't. Some "religion!"

I respectfully disagree. Our Forefathers did not have it in their minds or were not speaking about gay marriages. When they said freedom for all they meant race. Children are going to be taught this and they are going to have to accept it just as other horrible things have been accepted by our society. I am not trying to take anyones rights away. We need to vote for Yes on Prop 8. It is not takeing away anyones rights. We have been smashed and degraded from people because they believe we are. We as a people have a freedom of speech, religion, etc. We are excersing that right because we believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman. It is not right to make churches marry people who are gay especially when it is against that chruches beliefs. Marriage is a wonderful and joyous thing. Let us keep it sacred. Please think about what is right. Let us keep the family unit together and not pull it apart. If families are destroyed there will be more problems than there are today. This a challenging year for California, lets make a good choice and not let gay marrages occur. Please vote Yes on Proposition 8.

I don't have any problem with homosexual people being together, I actually have a good friend who is gay. But I don't believe that they should be able to marry. Go ahead, be together, live together; but marriage is a whole different thing. Marriage is meant to be between a man and woman, and that shouldn't change, so thats why I say Yes on Prop 8, its true what is being said about it - it is protecting marriage. It has nothing to do with discrimination, it has to do with marriage and what it really is, for man and wife.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. And yet here we are again. It doesn't matter if your gay or straight! This proposition is about Civil Rights!!!!! It frustrates me every time I hear people bring religion into this whole argument! Do you know how religious I am? That's right not at all! And you know what hey I can get married! Why should I be able to get married if I am not religious! Religion is just an arbitrary thing to me, to others it is their life. Religion should not be a part of this discussion. What should be is moral, civil and constitutional rights.

Okay Jesse, let us think about what is right. It is right to treat people equally. It is not right to restrict someone from love. Religion has been brought up many times in this argument, and I am frigging sick of it. You are trying to tell me that whatever some book says, which is supposedly the word of an almighty god who doesn't even have the time to help us out when the world is going to heck, is the right thing? Use your head. I grew up as a christian, and I found my own way. Quit being slaves! Anyhow, you guys seriously need to stop bringing in religion. It is stupid.

Slaves were counted as 3/5 of a person- something that was widely accepted and allowed because slavery is essentially condoned in the Bible. Religious beliefs and public policy should not be interchangeable. You stated freedom of speech and freedom of religion- your freedom of religion stops when you attempt to takes others away- and yes, believe it or not- whether you agree with it or not- some religions CONDONE same-sex marriage. The idea that Prop 8 isn't discriminatory is almost comical. So while you call homosexuality "horrible" in once sentence, and then go on to say you want to protect "wonderful and joyous" marriage in another... Don't try and pretend like those comments aren't bigoted- lets stop hiding behind religion. Slavery is in the bible- its not okay. stoning people for minor acts is in the bible- that's NOT okay. Religious texts don't justify discrimination, no matter how you spin it. GET REAL.
