Oscars

Wow! "Slumdog Millionaire" won best picture and 7 other Oscars! Sean Penn and Kate Winslet won best actor/actress, along with Heath Ledger and Penelope Cruz for best supporting. I liked Hugh Jackman's musical tribute, but other than that he wasn't a very entertaining host. Tina Fey and Steve Martin definately should have hosted together.

The Oscar Bias award goes to: Those who voted so many awards for Slumdog Millionaire but can't seem to vote for the ethnic actors for Best Actor or Actress. Happens every time, remember The Last Emperor. Tons of Oscars but not for the Lead actors. Racism always comes out in the Oscars.

I saw Slumdog yesterday, just hours before the Academy Awards. While I enjoyed the movie, even if its heavily percussive soundtrack left me slightly deaf, I did not think it deserved all those Oscars. The one award it richly deserved was for Best Editing. Without the highly inventive cutting, the film would have been terribly predictable. Considering the beautiful scores it was up against, it is a miracle that Slumdog won Best Original Score. Bang a drum, win an Oscar. That said, the Academy seems to be biased in favor of anything with an international flavor. This was evident a few years ago when the incredibly boring martial arts film “Crouching Tiger, Flying Dragon” won so much recognition. And how could Sean Penn’s impression of a gay man have won over Mickey Rourke’s powerful and deeply personal performance? Again, the bias of the Academy has always been evident when it comes to any film about gays. Brokeback Mountain was a terrible film (not taking anything away from the quality of the acting), yet it won over some other remarkable movies. So the fawning over Slumdog and its “sweep” at this year’s Oscars is no surprise to me since it fits very nicely into the pattern of past Academy votes.
