The power of the media

Hello everyone! I'm interested in your thoughts about the recent magazine cover from The New Yorker:

Personally, I think they missed this part:
Note that McCain is on the bottom left, saying, "If only I could get the New Yorker to do this cover...hmmm."

Do you agree with the following statement from the Wired Blog Network?
"Most people who see this cover are just going to see the image of Obama in a turban. It reinforces a critical piece of misinformation that right wing propagandists have advanced in order to poison the political climate in this country and make it that much more difficult for a person of color to be elected president. Well, it's no secret that since Obama's campaign even began that the fact that he used to be even associated with Islam (regardless that he is now a devout Christian) has be cause of much criticism. Surely everyone remembers the big drama with his middle name.

I think it was Nancy Pelosi that made a comment alluding to the possibility that Obama even won the nomination was because that despite all the qualifications Clinton had, America was simply not ready for their woman President. Maybe the same is true of Obama. Maybe America is not ready for a President of color. Although, he has a very strong youth following, so there is a very strong potential there as well.

I think that Obama is the best presidential candidate right now and Mccain is going to use every tactic to make sure that all the people who aren't ready for an African American president convince everyone else not to vote for him. This 'war on terror' is definitely being used, hence the turban, and it's slightly ridiculous because like michelle said he is christian. Personally, I think that Obama can overcome all this negative media and still win.

The terribly sad reality of this propaganda is that it isn't only the right wing that's falling for it.
My mother, a very politically neutral person, has wholeheartedly believed this gossip and used it as a cover up for her fears of reverse discrimination, which she has been subject to in her life.
She isn't the only in her generation that still has a taboo about race. It used to be the way things were. I think Michelle is right, Obama has a strong youth following, and I believe that is the sole way he is going to ever win this.
We can't leave it up to an older generation whose mindset is subconciously racist from their childhood. (They aren't all this way, so sorry Mr. Nichols!)

Has anyone read the New Yorker article in question? I'm pretty sure that it's about all the things that GOP has tried to slap onto the Obama campaign; it's not "right wing propaganda" per se, but a look at how the conservatives have said some pretty ridiculous things about Obama.

Besides, the New Yorker is as liberal of a magazine as you are going to get, so I don't think that it was a "tactic" of the McCain Gang, but a way of garnering attention with satire, even if many people didn't get the joke.
